I’m fresh off my journey to the Peruvian Amazon and what an intro to the new year it was! I journeyed to the Amazonian city of Pucallpa before traveling to a small village to attend an intensive retreat hosted by locals from the area.
This retreat differs from many in that they prefer not to advertise and work primarily via word-of-mouth. As a result, my husband and I were joined by a small group of visitors including 3 people who are friends with his cousin, 2 repeat visitors (all 5 of them residents of Zagreb, Croatia) and a lovely woman who arrived a few days after us who had met the head of the center at a sister retreat in her home country of Brazil.
At times, we didn’t know what was the most effective - the local traditions of the Amazon, living in complete harmony with nature - including sleeping and waking with the sun, or taking a true vacation by cutting off all phone and internet contact. I suppose it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that I’ve returned as revitalized as I’d imagined... and more.
It’s not unusual to take 2 weeks off at a time for vacation, but to spend the bulk of that period offline is.
I’ll continue to incorporate the lessons I've learned, increase time spent outdoors and commit to spending less non-essential time on the ‘net.
In fact, I’m continuing my Instagram hiatus for a gentle return around the end of this month and found I don’t miss it all.
January is a month steeped in goals and we have a tendency to focus on what’s missing from our lives. However, sometimes we only gain when we take something away- whether that’s minimizing distractions, eating less, giving away items we no longer need or cutting out the noise to buckle down and meditate.
What can you take away or reduce to help you reach your desires?
